A Competitive Day of Badminton at the Parklangley Club Championships

Our annual Club Championships brought badminton players of every section out onto the courts. From the very first rallies, it was clear this year’s competition would be one to
remember — fiercely contested, brilliantly played and supported by one of the best crowds we’ve had at the club.
A genuinely competitive field
Across every category, the matches were tight. Plenty of ties went the distance, with several finals decided by only a handful of points and plenty of three-game thrillers that had everyone holding their breath. What stood out wasn’t just the winning shots, but the quality of the rallies — long, attacking exchanges, sharp net play and incredible court coverage in the heat and humidity.
The A-Section events showcased badminton of the highest standard. Mahendrran
Selvaduray and David Lang were in superb form, combining to take the Open Doubles A
title, with Mahendrran also claiming Open Singles A. But the standout performer of the day was arguably Mili Patel, who completed a remarkable treble — Women’s Singles A,
Women’s Doubles A (with Neetu Kasana) and Mixed Doubles A (with David Lang), taking
home a hat-trick of trophies.
In C-Section, Partha Mani matched that achievement with three titles of his own — Open
Singles C, Open Doubles C (with Syed Tangam) and Mixed Doubles C (with Shilpa Pathak). Shilpa herself was a double champion, adding a Mixed Doubles B title alongside Shahbaz Ali, who also took Open Doubles B with Alexander Pastron. Right across the draw, it was a day where the depth of talent at the club really shone through.
Brilliant support from the sidelines
The courtside was packed for much of the day, and the atmosphere lifted every match —
cheers for the winners and warm applause for the losers, with a lovely buzz of a club out in force to support one another. The encouragement made a real difference to the players, and it’s exactly the kind of community spirit that makes these championships so special.
And then there was the BBQ
When the last shuttle had been struck, everyone headed outside for a well-earned
barbecue. With the courts cooling down and plates filling up, players, families and
supporters relaxed together in the sunshine, swapping match stories and trophies-in-hand photos. It was the perfect way to round off the day — good food, good company, and the unmistakable feeling that this is a club that plays hard and celebrates together.
A huge thank you to everyone who took part, cheered from the sidelines, and helped make the day such a success. Roll on next year!
