Tennis Club Champs Finals Day 2026

We couldn't really have asked for much more from Finals Day - The weather behaved itself (for once), the standard of tennis was excellent, and there were plenty of exciting matches to keep everyone entertained!

Open Events

Although the Men's Singles final was not as close as Tim Schoenert would have liked there were some amazing shots from both players with Isaac Jochim regaining the title he won 3 years ago.

Isaac went on to win the Men's Doubles with Kai Williams, in a really fun match to watch against Zeph Davis and Will Kemp.

Kai then played in the Mixed Doubles with Daisy Hugkulstone defeating last years winners Tim Schoenert and Suzanne Williams in another great match. A busy afternoon for Kai — we're not entirely convinced he left the court all day.

Isabella Basson beat Sandra Webster after a long, hard-fought match. Sandra, as ever, showed that experience can still cause plenty of problems for the young Bella!

Sandra did leave with a trophy, winning the Ladies' Doubles. Unfortunately, the final was decided by a walkover after Shelley was unable to play. We wish Shelley a speedy recovery, and a very happy birthday to her partner, Melina.

Veteran Events

The first set of the Vets Men's singles was very tight with Richard Lassiter prevailing and easing past Alan in the 2nd set.

The experience of Soren Hansen and Julian Rouse ensured a victory against Rob Firmin and Nick Ivin, who improved as the match progressed.

Nick's wife Lana won the ladies singles against Melinda, a match where the rallies and number of deuce games were not reflected in the final score.

Sandra and Roz won the ladies doubles and both went on to play mixed doubles events, Sandra in the vets and Roz in the super vets.

Sandra and her partner Jon Boy lost out to Mick Hooker and Suzanne Williams in a thoroughly enjoyable match.

Supervets Events

One of the matches of the day came in the Super Veterans Men's Singles, where Bede edged past Trevor 10–7 in a Championship Tie-Break. It had just about everyone watching on the edge of their seats.

Bede then partnered Richard Potter to claim the Men's Doubles title, defeating last year's champions Kwan and Tim.

The closest finish of the entire day belonged to Roz and Jim, who defeated defending champions Chris Webster and Jane Boffa 11–9 in a dramatic Championship Tie-Break.

Handicap Events

Defending Men's Singles champion Vik Sehgal couldn't quite hold off Paul Harrison, whose two-point handicap advantage proved just enough to tip the balance.

Vik bounced back in the Mixed Doubles alongside Caroline Mongan, defeating Nick Ng and Man Li in a match played on equal handicaps.

The Men's Doubles was another thriller, with Freddie and Richard just running out of steam in the tie-break, leaving Noel and Ian with some very well-earned (and very wide!) smiles as they lifted the trophy.

As always, Finals Day simply wouldn't happen without the many people working behind the scenes.

A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered to umpire throughout the day. It's a role that often goes unnoticed but is absolutely vital to making the event run so smoothly.

Special thanks also go to Julie and Mark Fox, who once again spent Friday evening cleaning every trophy and arranging them beautifully in the foyer before the action began. It's one of those jobs nobody notices until it hasn't been done!

Throughout the day, Julie, Sue Marais and Caroline Mongan ensured the trophy presentations ran seamlessly, with David Wrighton doing the honours.

A massive thank you also to all of the club staff:

• Ashleigh, who helps organise the entire event, from ordering balls and water for players and umpires to dealing with the countless little jobs that somehow always appear on Finals Day.

• Bhagyada, and Marcel who teamed up to captured most of the fantastic photographs from the day.

• Kelsey, whose help throughout the day ensured everything stayed organised and running smoothly.

• Sam and the bar team, who kept everyone well refreshed.

• Jo and the kitchen and BBQ team, who kept everyone equally well fed!

To every player, supporter, volunteer and member who helped create such a brilliant atmosphere—thank you. Finals Day is always one of the highlights of the club calendar, and this year was no exception.

We can't wait to do it all again next year!
